Researchers from leading institutions, including Moorfields Eye Hospital and University College London, have launched the Global RETFound initiative to create the first globally representative AI foundation model in medicine, focused on ophthalmology. With over 100 million eye images from around the world, this project addresses significant under-representation in current medical AI research, particularly from regions with high prevalence of eye disease. Using innovative data-sharing practices, Global RETFound aims to enhance detection capabilities for systemic diseases and make AI tools accessible worldwide.
