CAM: Rethinking Regeneration in Ocular Surface Disease

Amniotic membrane tissue (AMT) is an innovative tool in managing ocular surface diseases, with unique anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties. Initially used in the 1940s as a conjunctival substitute, advancements in preservation and applicability have expanded its role in treating conditions such as dry eye disease, corneal ulcers, and prior to cataract surgeries. The heavy chain-hyaluronan/pentraxin 3 complex is critical for supporting corneal health. There is a potential for AMT’s expanded use, particularly in conjunction with other treatments for nerve dysfunction.
