Today, ZEISS Medical Technology announced a newly dedicated cataract-only configuration of its DORC EVA NEXUS ophthalmic surgical system. The platform is set to make its global debut this coming September at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) congress in London (Sept. 11-14).
The new configuration extends the EVA NEXUS platform into the ZEISS Cataract Workflow, making it specifically designed for cataract surgeons looking to streamline their performance in the OR. The configuration will include a cataract grade selection feature with up to four programmable presets, allowing surgeons to choose optimized phacoemulsification, aspiration, and irrigation settings according to the surgical step and cataract grade. These settings can then be seamlessly activated using either the footswitch or touchscreen.
In a press release, ZEISS said the system had been developed around three specific areas: performance, stability, and control. To achieve this aim, the configuration offers a combination of advanced technology – VacuFlow VTi fluidics, SMART IOP technology, and the EVA EQUIPHACO phaco platform.
VacuFlow VTi uses an advanced fluidics technology (Valve Timing Intelligence) to provide either pulsation-free flow or fast and responsive vacuum during cataract procedures. The SMART IOP technology, meanwhile, automatically compensates for pressure losses in an effort to maintain constant intraocular pressure. According to ZEISS, this technology provides lower, more stable anterior chamber pressure and up to 73% greater responsiveness compared with the previous DORC EVA Surgical System, including during post-occlusion breaks.
The cataract configuration also incorporates the lightweight DORC EVA SURE TOUCH phaco handpiece alongside the EVA EQUIPHACO range of phaco tips. A customizable wireless Dual Linear footswitch allows surgeons to independently control aspiration and ultrasound.
“With the newly configured DORC EVA NEXUS cataract solution, ZEISS’ advanced technology is redefining how cataract surgeons can operate in the OR,” said Dominik Beck, Head of Posterior Surgery Business Sector at ZEISS Medical Technology, adding that the system was designed to support surgical decision-making and procedural precision.

The cataract-only EVA NEXUS is expected to become available in selected European countries from September 2026, with wider global availability to follow pending regional regulatory approvals.
