Heru has launched PretestPro, a new software-based pretesting workflow for its Heru Prime virtual reality diagnostic headset that combines four eye exams into a single 90-second assessment.
The US launch adds 8-point suprathreshold testing, near cover testing, extraocular motility assessment, and quantitative pupillometry, including relative afferent pupillary defect and PERRLA status, to a guided workflow delivered through the wearable platform.
According to Heru, the system uses virtual reality and eye tracking to automate tests that would traditionally require multiple devices and manual steps. Results are compiled into a consolidated quantitative report.
“PretestPro isn’t just a faster test. It is a fundamentally different way to structure the diagnostic workflow,” said Mohamed Abou Shousha, founder and CEO of Heru and professor of clinical ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. “Traditional pretesting requires multiple devices and several manual steps. PretestPro consolidates these tests into a single wearable exam that runs about three times faster than traditional testing.”
Patients are guided through the assessment using Nora, Heru’s fixation target, which is designed to help maintain fixation while the headset performs the different test modalities.
Heru Prime users can also add visual acuity testing, which the company says requires a further 30 seconds. Together, this would allow practices to complete what Heru describes as 50% of routine pretesting within approximately two minutes.
The broader Heru Prime platform can also perform suprathreshold and full-threshold visual field testing, including 24-2, 10-2, 30-2, and Esterman protocols, as well as color vision, cover testing, pupillometry, extraocular motility, and visual acuity assessment.
Heru said the portable technology is intended to reduce dependence on separate legacy devices while allowing testing to be performed in different clinical settings, including pretest areas, waiting rooms, and remote locations.
PretestPro will be made available to both existing and future Heru Prime customers through an automatic software update at no additional charge.
